As our nation reflects on the historic celebration of our 250th anniversary this month, the question of what binds us together as Americans has never been more vital. I recently sat down with Dr. Robert P. George—McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and Director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University—for an episode of my podcast, Older/Wiser on The Next Move.
Our discussion, titled “The Declaration of Independence: America’s Ancient Faith,” gets straight to the heart of the core principles that have guided the Center for Equal Opportunity for three decades: colorblind equality, individual rights, and a shared American identity.
During our conversation, Professor George and I explored why the Declaration of Independence remains one of the most revolutionary documents in human history, and why its core tenets are essential for counteracting the tribalism and identity politics of today.
Key themes we discussed include:
- Radical Equality and Unalienable Rights: The Declaration’s foundational claim—that all human beings are created equal and endowed with natural rights—is the moral cornerstone of a colorblind society. Rights belong to individuals, not identity groups.
- A Creed Beyond Blood and Soil: Unlike nations formed around shared ancestry or ethnic heritage, America is bound together by an “ancient faith”—a civic creed that welcomes people of every background, race, and religion into a single national family.
- Restoring Civic Education: To preserve our republic, we must ensure the rising generation understands their extraordinary civic inheritance, rejecting the notion that American history is defined solely by oppression or division.
